Music is important. Every society since the beginning of history has created music and used music to celebrate, entertain, uplift, and console the soul. Music was always something that you did. Oh sure, there might be the occasional performance by a master performer, but everyone participated in the making of the music. If all they had was 2 sticks, they would hit them together to join in the band. It is quite a modern thing for people to see music as something you listen to…but not create yourself. This great art of self expression and creativity has been pushed to the back of the class. It has become something that is done once the tests have been completed. Where did we get the idea that math was more important than music?
Especially since the fundamentals of math are felt internally through music. Study skills…everyone knows that if you have a huge list to memorize…set it to music. Science…music is at the heart of physics, and in biology we learn that nearly every species of animal has a singing element to it. In literature and writing, many of the oldest manuscripts we have access to are actually musical texts. The largest book in the bible is a book of songs.
History…is reflected in the music of the society. It is time we put music back at the head of the class along side math, writing, reading, and science. Music is important.
